About UsThe instrumental music program at the Howe-Manning School offers students at all levels of ability. In Grade 3, students begin their instrumental music study learning to play the recorder. This is an affordable and accessible first wind instrument. Learning to play the recorder builds fine motor skills, instills self-confidence and develops good study habits. Grade 4 students can choose to begin to study a band instrument beginning in September. We offer weekly group lessons on flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone and percussion. In January, the students come together to form the HM Beginning Band. Continuing students in Grades 5 and 6 join the HM Advanced Band. This performing ensemble gives three formal concerts each year, performs in multiple all-school assemblies and the Town of Middleton Memorial Day Parade. Group lessons are offered during the school day using a pull-out format. They are scheduled on a rotating basis over a 4 week period. Scheduling is often revised in consultation with classroom teachers and support staff to maximize each students' experience. Students with at least two years of lessons may also join the HM Jazz Band. You do not need to be enrolled in the Instrumental Music Program. This group meets weekly on Thursday mornings and includes drumset, electric bass, electric guitar (still needed) and piano. |
